John 14 (New King James Version)
John 14
The Way, the Truth, and the Life
1 "Let not your heart be troubled;
you believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 In My Father's house are many
mansions;[a] if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place
for you.[b] 3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and
receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. 4 And where I go
you know, and the way you know."
5 Thomas said to Him, "Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how
can we know the way?"
6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes
to the Father except through Me.
The Father Revealed
7 "If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now
on you know Him and have seen Him."
8 Philip said to Him, "Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for
us."
9 Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not
known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say,
'Show us the Father'? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father
in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but
the Father who dwells in Me does the works. 11 Believe Me that Iam in the
Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works
themselves.
The Answered Prayer
12 "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I
do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My
Father. 13 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may
be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask[c] anything in My name, I will do it.
Jesus Promises Another Helper
15 "If you love Me, keep[d] My commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father,
and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the
Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor
knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. 18 I
will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.
Indwelling of the Father and the Son
19 "A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will
see Me. Because I live, you will live also. 20 At that day you will know that I
am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.21 He who has My commandments and
keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My
Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him."
22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, "Lord, how is it that You will
manifest Yourself to us, and not to the world?"
23 Jesus answered and said to him, "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My
word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home
with him. 24 He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which
you hear is not Mine but the Father's who sent Me.
The Gift of His Peace
25 "These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. 26 But
the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will
teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to
you. 27 Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives
do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. 28
You have heard Me say to you, 'I am going away and coming back to you.' If you
loved Me, you would rejoice because I said,[e] 'I am going to the Father,' for
My Father is greater than I.
29 "And now I have told you before it comes, that when it does come to
pass, you may believe. 30 I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of
this world is coming, and he has nothing in Me. 31 But that the world may know
that I love the Father, and as the Father gave Me commandment, so I do. Arise,
let us go from here.
THE HOLY SPIRIT
"Howbeit when He, the Spirit of
truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth:
For He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall
He speak:
And He will show you things to come. He shall glorify Me ..."
John 16:13, 14

- Matthew 3:16 V.The work of The Triune God can be seen
in that, even as the Son came to glorify the Father
- (John 17:4), so was the
Spirit sent to glorify the Son (John 8:55; 16:14).
A.The Father's promise to send the Spirit was
given long before Jesus ever came to earth.
Isaiah 44:3 "For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and
floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my
blessing upon thine offspring." Isaiah 32:15 "Until the spirit be
poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness be a fruitful field, and the
fruitful field be counted for a forest." Ezekiel 36:27 "And I will
put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall
keep my judgments, and do them." Joel 2:28 "And it shall come to pass
afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and
your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men
shall see visions." Zechariah 12:10 "And I will pour upon the house
of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications:
and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for
him, as one mourneth for his only son ..."
B.The Lord Jesus Himself promised that when He
should leave He would send the Spirit of Truth.
Luke 24:49 "And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but
tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on
high." John 14:16 "And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you
another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever." John 16:7
"Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he
saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little
while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?" Acts 1:4
"And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should
not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith
he, ye have heard of me."
THE GODHEAD
"...in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy
Ghost."
Matthew 28:19
- The doctrine of the
Trinity (or, Godhead) – attacked by cults (such as the Watchtower Society,
- or Jehovah's
Witnesses) so that they can also deny the deity of Jesus – is one of the
most basic
- fundamentals of
Christianity.
- Although the word
"trinity" is not in the Bible, the concept of the three-in-one,
the triune
- God, is. The term
"Godhead," referring to the three-in-one, can be found in Acts
17:29
- and Colossians 2:9.
(Many other words or concepts "not in the Bible" are
scriptural
- nonetheless: i.e.,
theology, Bible, etc.)Acts 17:29
- The doctrine of the
Godhead can be summed up in the literal Hebrew translation of one verse.
- Deuteronomy
6:4"Hear, O Israel,
Jehovah our Gods (plural) is Jehovah a unity."
- The concept of the
Godhead (Trinity) is evident in scripture as early as the first chapter of
the
- book of Genesis.
- The Hebrew word Elohim
(translated "God" in Genesis 1:1) actually indicates more than
- one divine
personality. This same plural form is used over 2,500 times in the Old
Testament.
B.In the account of creation recorded in the
book of Genesis God speaks plurally of His
own Person.
- Genesis 1:26, 27
(See also Genesis 3:22; 11:7; Isaiah 6:3, 8.)"Let us make man in our
- image, after our
likeness ... So God created man in His own image, in the image of God
created He him."
- III.Even the Old Testament makes definite
reference both to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
Isaiah 11:2
"... the Spirit ... the Lord ... Him"
Isaiah 42:1
"My Servant ... I ... My Spirit ... upon Him"
Isaiah 48:16
"The Lord God ... His Spirit ... sent Me"
Isaiah 61:1
"Spirit of the Lord God ... upon Me ... the Lord"
Isaiah 63:9
"He ...the Angel of His Presence ... His Holy Spirit"
- Ezekiel 36:26, 27
IV.Close examination of the
following New Testament scriptures will make obvious to any student of
the Bible that the doctrine of the Godhead is truth.
- Matthew 1:20, 21
"the Lord (the Father) ... the Holy Spirit ... Jesus"
- Matthew 3:16, 17

I.The Father is a distinct
personality apart from the Spirit:

II. The Spirit is a distinct personality apart from the Son:
Matthew 123:31, 32 (Luke
12:10)
John 16:7, 13, 14
1 John 5:6-8 III.
The Son is a distinct personality

IV.Yet "the Lord our Gods (plural, Heb.) is one Lord.
- " This is a
mystery.
- Deuteronomy 6:4
- Genesis 1:26, 27
("...us...our...our") ..
- "Not by might, nor
by power,
- but by My Spirit",
says the Lord
- (Genesis 41:38) So
Pharaoh asked them, "Can we find anyone like this man, one in whom is
the spirit of God?"
(Exodus 31:3-5) and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill,
ability and knowledge in all kinds of crafts-- {4} to make artistic designs for
work in gold, silver and bronze, {5} to cut and set stones, to work in wood,
and to engage in all kinds of craftsmanship.
(Job 33:4) The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives
me life.
(Psalms 51:10-13) Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast
spirit within me. {11} Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy
Spirit from me. {12} Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a
willing spirit, to sustain me. {13} Then I will teach transgressors your ways,
and sinners will turn back to you.
(Isaiah 11:2-3) The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him-- the Spirit of
wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of
knowledge and of the fear of the LORD-- {3} and he will delight in the fear of
the LORD. He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he
hears with his ears;
(Isaiah 61:1-2) The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD
has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the
brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness
for the prisoners, {2} to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor and the day of
vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn,
(Joel 2:28-29) 'And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your
young men will see visions. {29} Even on my servants, both men and women, I
will pour out my Spirit in those days.
(Zechariah 4:6) So he said to me, "This is the word of the LORD to
Zerubbabel: 'Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,' says the LORD
Almighty.
(Matthew 10:19-20) But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say
or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say, {20} for it will
not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
(Matthew 12:28) But if I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the
kingdom of God has come upon you.
(Luke 3:16) John answered them all, "I baptize you with water. But one
more powerful than I will come, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to
untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
(Luke 4:18-19) "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has
anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom
for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed,
{19} to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."
(John 6:63) The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words
I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life.
(John 14:15-18) "If you love me, you will obey what I command. {16}
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with
you forever-- {17} the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it
neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and
will be in you. {18} I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
(John 15:26) "When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from
the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify
about me.
(John 16:12-15) "I have much more to say to you, more than you can now
bear. {13} But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all
truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he
will tell you what is yet to come. {14} He will bring glory to me by taking from
what is mine and making it known to you. {15} All that belongs to the Father is
mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it
known to you.
(Acts 1:8) But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you;
and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to
the ends of the earth."
(Romans 1:4) and who through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power
to be the Son of God by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.
(Romans 5:5) And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out
his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.
(Romans 8:1-2) Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in
Christ Jesus, {2} because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life
set me free from the law of sin and death.
(Romans 8:9-17) You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but
by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have
the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. {10} But if Christ is in
you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of
righteousness. {11} And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is
living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your
mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you. {12} Therefore, brothers,
we have an obligation--but it is not to the sinful nature, to live according to
it. {13} For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if
by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, {14}
because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. {15} For you
did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received
the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father." {16} The
Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. {17} Now
if we are children, then we are heirs--heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ,
if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his
glory.
(Romans 8:26-27) In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We
do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us
with groans that words cannot express. {27} And he who searches our hearts
knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in
accordance with God's will.
(1 Corinthians 2:9-14) However, as it is written: "No eye has seen, no
ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love
him"-- {10} but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit
searches all things, even the deep things of God. {11} For who among men knows
the thoughts of a man except the man's spirit within him? In the same way no
one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. {12} We have not
received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may
understand what God has freely given us. {13} This is what we speak, not in
words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing
spiritual truths in spiritual words. {14} The man without the Spirit does not
accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to
him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.
(1 Corinthians 3:16-17) Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple
and that God's Spirit lives in you? {17} If anyone destroys God's temple, God
will destroy him; for God's temple is sacred, and you are that temple.
(1 Corinthians 6:9-11) Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the
kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters
nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders {10} nor thieves
nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the
kingdom of God. {11} And that is what some of you were. But you were washed,
you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ
and by the Spirit of our God.
(1 Corinthians 12:3-13) Therefore I tell you that no one who is speaking by
the Spirit of God says, "Jesus be cursed," and no one can say,
"Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit. {4} There are different
kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. {5} There are different kinds of service,
but the same Lord. {6} There are different kinds of working, but the same God
works all of them in all men. {7} Now to each one the manifestation of the
Spirit is given for the common good. {8} To one there is given through the
Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of
the same Spirit, {9} to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing
by that one Spirit, {10} to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to
another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds
of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. {11} All these
are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as
he determines. {12} The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and
though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ. {13}
For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body--whether Jews or Greeks,
slave or free--and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.
(2 Corinthians 3:16-18) But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is
taken away. {17} Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord
is, there is freedom. {18} And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the
Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing
glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
(Galatians 5:22-25) But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace,
patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, {23} gentleness and self-control.
Against such things there is no law. {24} Those who belong to Christ Jesus have
crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. {25} Since we live
by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.
(Ephesians 4:29-32) Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your
mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their
needs, that it may benefit those who listen. {30} And do not grieve the Holy
Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. {31} Get
rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every
form of malice. {32} Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other,
just as in Christ God forgave you.
(2 Thessalonians 2:13-14) But we ought always to thank God for you,
brothers loved by the Lord, because from the beginning God chose you to be
saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the
truth. {14} He called you to this through our gospel, that you might share in
the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
(2 Timothy 1:7) For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit
of power, of love and of self-discipline.
(1 Peter 3:18) For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the
unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made
alive by the Spirit,
(1 John 2:27) As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in
you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you
about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit--just as it has
taught you, remain in him.
(1 John 3:23-24) And this is his command: to believe in the name of his
Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. {24} Those who
obey his commands live in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he
lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.
(1 John 4:12-13) No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives
in us and his love is made complete in us. {13} We know that we live in him and
he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.
(Revelation 19:10) At this I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said
to me, "Do not do it! I am a fellow servant with you and with your
brothers who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the testimony of
Jesus is the spirit of prophecy."
